A sterling group of musicians will join together in celebration and memory of the late great improvising pianist/composer Connie Crothers on Friday evening, September 27, 2019 at Metro Baptist Church in Hell’s Kitchen. Slated to perform are vocalist and songwriter Andrea Wolper; pianist Carol Liebowitz; bassoonist Claire de Brunner; vocalist Cheryl Richards; pianist Virg Dzurinko; and pianist/vocalist Kazzrie Jaxen. These six women, all of whom were close associates and dear friends of Connie’s and all of whom have highly individual musical “voices,” carry forward Connie’s legacy of unfettered improvisation, which she defined as “spontaneous composition.” Each musician — either solo or in a group setting — will present a short set inspired by Connie’s life and work, including a number of “jazz lines” she composed.
